Indo-U.S. military cooperation growing: Navy chief Madhavendra Singh

WASHINGTON: Indo-U.S. military-to-military dialogue is "developing day by day" and both sides are now gearing up for the largest ever joint naval exercises scheduled to begin later this month, according to India's Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Madhvendra Singh.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Admiral Singh said the chapter of US sanctions was over with the release last month of spare parts for the Indian Navy's Sea King helicopters, and both sides are now preparing for joint naval exercises, likely to be participated by four to five thousand personnel, off Cochin from September 28.
He however, clearly stated that he saw no role for the Indian Navy, which is jointly patrolling the Straits of Malacca as part of the joint operations against piracy, in the wake of a possible US attack on Iraq.
He also said that the Indian Navy is not involved in intercepting any ships carrying al-Qaeda suspects.
However, when asked whether India would be ready if Pakistan launches an attack on India, Admiral Singh said, "We are always ready."
Referring to the three modern submarines which Pakistanis were buying from France, Admiral Singh said: "They are very capable submarines and we are, therefore, concentrating a great deal on anti-submarine warfare to counter those submarines." He also pointed out that Indian researchers had developed submarine detection equpment that is among the best in the world.
Admiral Madhvendra Singh, who is on an official visit to the US from September 7 to 18, held talks with senior American officials like Admiral Vernon E. Clark, Chief of Naval Operations, U.S. Navy, Douglas J. Feith, Undersecretary of Defence for Policy and Ms. Susan M. Livingston, Unddersecretary of the Navy.
According to an Indian embassy release, the Admiral's visit assumes significance in the context of the Indo-U.S. bilateral relationship, as the two sides have had an intense interfce on defence matters for the past one year.
During Admiral Singh's current visit, the two sides reiterated their desire to futher strengthen the defence relationship and had an extensive exchange of views on global and regional security issues.
The tour of the Indian Navy chief concluded on Tuesday after meetings with Air Force General Richard Myers, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, and General James L. Jones, Commandant of the Marine Corps.
Admiral Singh also extended an invitation to Admiral Clark to visit India next year.
