..................SARDAR NANAK SINGH
...................5th March 1947
..The 5th of March that year dawned like any other day.
There was nothing early that morning to differentiate it from all other days. But the events of the day were going to change the lives of many in India, particularly in Multan. A closely knit Sikh family was to be shattered by the middle of the day.
Sardar Nanak Singh, his wife, Sardani Harbans Kaur and their seven children, six sons and one little daughter, started the morning carrying out their normal routine. They had absolutely no idea of the coming Holocaust.
In the morning, Nanak Singh, who was a practicing lawyer, went to the court as he he had done every day. Sardani Harbans Kaur busied herself with the usual household chores. The older children had left for school.
1946 and 1947 were difficult years for India. After years of ruling India the British had finally decided to leave. But exactly when they would leave, to whom they would hand over power, was not clear.
All-India Muslim League, a party representing a vast majority of Muslims in India, was determined in their The All-India Congress Party was equally determined not to accept the division of the country. Mahatma Gandhi and other top Indian leaders strongly supported the concept of 'Akhand Bharat' or a 'United India'.
"We are all knitted & woven together by bonds of love and patriotism. No one can segregate us into segments; no impassable barriers can be set up between us." These were the words spoken by Sardar Nanak Singh in the preceding months.
All over India the youth had got involved in the freedom struggle. They took out processions, shouted slogans, held rallies and passed resolutions.
Multan was no different. On the morning of March 5, 1947, Hindu and Sikh students of Emerson College, Multan, took out a procession against the partition of India - against the formation of Pakistan.
On the way younger students of DAV school Multan joined this procession. As the procession moved forward, more and more students and youngsters joined it. Soon the procession was 700 to 800 strong.
This peaceful and unarmed procession moved on towards the city centre, shouting patriotic slogans, demonstrating their resolve to keep India united. "Akhand Bharat" was what they stood for. Little did the young and the innocent in that procession knew as to what lay ahead.
In the historic city of Multan where the two shrines of Hazrat Bahawal Haque, and Bhagat Prahlad stand side-by-side, communal frenzy reached an all-time high resulting in sudden outbreak of violence and attacks on the demonstrating students.
5th of March was the day in 1716 when hundreds of Sikhs had been killed by Zakira Khan. Now 5th of March 1947 was to see the martyrdom of another great Sikh.
initially, restrictions were placed by the British authorities on giving out any details of what happened in Multan that day, that is, the circumstances of Sardar Nanak Singh's martyrdom.
Slowly the people came to know what had taken place on that fateful day.
The peaceful procession shouting, "Long Live Secular India," and "Akhand Bharat Amar Rahe," slowly made its way towards Bohar Gate - now coming into an area dominated by the Muslims with strong pro Pakistan feelings.
The innocent Hindu and Sikh students could not foresee what lay ahead for them.
Suddenly the procession was attacked from all sides by the pro Pakistani Muslim mob. The children hit and beaten with sticks, struck with long butchers' knives, wounded with all kinds of daggers and mutilated with sharp machetes. Many children lay wounded or dying and some managed to escape by running away as fast as they could.
Having put a bloody end to the peaceful procession, the mob then fanned out and started setting fire to the houses and shops belonging to the Hindus. It was a scene of widespread savagery and plunder. News of the attack spread rapidly throughout the city of Multan. Sardar Nanak also heard it at the district courts.
He was safe. There was no threat or risk to his life. But without thinking of his own personal safety, Sardar Nanak rushed out of the court and proceeded towards the reported sighting of the procession under attack.
Reaching the spot within minutes, he saw the Muslims still chasing and attacking the defenceless children. Not thinking of his own safety, and disregarding the danger to his own person, Sardar Nanak Singh challenged that murderous mob. A witness, watching the scene from balcony on second floor near by, described Sardar Nanak Singh, possessed by some higher ideal in life, inspired by the Spirit of Lord Krishna and Guru Gobind Singh ji, standing there inspired by his stand for Truth and Right, forgetting the meaning of fear. Sardar Nanak Singh did the impossible. Instead of moving away to be out of sight of the blood thirsty murderers, he challenged them.
Nanak Singh challenged the mob - going straight into their middle, he shouted loudly at them to stop the butchery of the children.
Seeing his courage, some in the mob relented, moved away, thus letting some children escape. But the others quickly rallied to surround and attack Sardar Nanak Singh with sharp lethal weapons in their hands.
An eyewitness states that even when Sardar Nanak Singh was mortally wounded and profusely bleeding, he managed to raise his right hand in the unmistakab gesture of defiance as if to pronounced DEATH TO PAKISTAN and ISLAMIC SEPARATISM.
Were those Indian Muslims loyal to their country of birth and cared for the lives of their non Muslim fellow citizesn?
Not only die they durder Sardar Nanak Singh, a great man, a great soul, a great patriot and a national hero, who died so that the others may live, but also destroyed the peace of land, the unity of their country and the trust in Muslim decency and loyalty, and then went on to murder a million more within weeks. Within weeks the angry gods plunged Multan and countless other cities, towns and villages in western and eastern India into medieval dark ages of savagery and brutality.
Those ugly fires of religious hatred, stemming out of their "unholy" KORAN not only destroyed the unity and peace of India but also devoured the beautiful mountains, rivers and valleys, and the singing shepherds and the beautiful shepherdesses of Kashmir.
