Subj: BANNING DONALD TRUMP’S ENTRY TO UK
Sir,
One cornerstone of democracy is to listen to the other’s point of view. Banning anyone from coming to this country in order to prevent him from speaking to the people seems dangerous in two ways:
1, It keeps those who eagerly wish to listen and gain knowledge from a different point of view are deprived of the benefit.
2. It encourages the intolerant and those rigid in thinking and self-righteous, to keep a well-known speaker out, just because of his views.
In the USA fundamentalist Muslims, all well-educated and from wealthy families, destroyed the two World Trade Centre towers in New York killing thousands of innocent office workers. Killing of American citizens has continued unabated since.
In the UK, too, we have had those who share the same ideology, actually shot and killed dozens of innocent people in London in 2007. The latest victim was Drummer Lee Rigby. There is no outcry that these murderers should be expelled, or kept out of the country!
Collecting six hundred thousand or a million signatures to keep Mr Trump out, is meaningless since none of those collecting signatures or signing the petition feels threatened in any way. But there is every possibility of the one who campaigns for his entry to UK being hurt, even shot or killed in the street. That is why there is NO counter petition, collecting signatures, in favour of Mr Trump’s freedom to enter the United Kingdom.
British people are mature and can form their own opinion about what they hear. Unfortunately, with the new demographic and cultural changes taking place, both democracy and freedom of speech are taking the knock in Western countries.
In the end we all will end up like the yelling crowd, baying for Mr Trump, trying to intimidate the silent majority, and become intolerant morons.
Yours truly
