NEPAL
While Modijee has been the only PM in India who had come out with an explicit Neighborhood First proclamation--IK Gujaral was not so dramatic--it must bother him to find it in shambles under his very watch. However, with hostilities with China and Pakistan rising and with economy tanking, more so with Coronavirus ravaging the country, it is rather strange that it has still found it worth its time and energy to activating its "assets" in Kathmandu to raise a non-existent border problem of Nepal with China. India must bear in mind four essential points in its relation to Nepal. Firstly, landlocked Nepal,
tormented by India with its hegemonic design all these decades, was forced to move into China's embrace after India's third blockade of 2015.secondly, Nepal is united against India's illegal occupation of the Kalapani region, and even the Madhesi parties, otherwise under India's influence all these years, voted with the rest of the legislators in the parliament in adopting the new map of Nepal that includes that encroached territory. Thirdly, Nepal, with improved connectivity with China, is no longer exclusively dependent on India for its imports and exports. And lastly, Nepal sits at the upstream of the Gangetic basin, and without Nepal's cooperation India could never manage its chronic water management problems.
India, therefore, must opt for a win-win relationship with Nepal, starting with the return of the Kalapani region to its rightful owner.
